In this 2-day screen printing class, students will learn the basic language and structures of textile design using tracing paper, cut-out stencils, and textile inks to explore shape, color, and pattern designs on fabric. The method of printing, of layering colorful shapes with textile inks is improvisational. It is a meaningful way to explore the possibilities of pattern design using shape and color. Students will be inspired by the playful aesthetics of the art and designs of mid-century modern artists.
Instruction includes a demonstration of the improvisational method of screen printing, how to mix inks, setting up a padded surface, types of fabric substrates, placement of fabric on a padded surface, screen mesh, and screen frames, how to use a squeegee and stencil methods of screen printing. Included are instructional handouts, a materials list, and textile suppliers.
In addition to using hand-cut stencils for printing, there is an opportunity to have a personal design applied to one of Carrie’s screens for class use or to have your very own screen at an additional cost of $25.00. Please email Carrie at carrieburckle@gmail.com for specific information.
